We usually use commercial sets of rules such as Age of Reason or Fire & Fury. However, we have come to love two sets of rules available from the Internet in Mustangs/Phantoms and Age of Eagles. There is no requirement to own a set of rules in our club, but it certainly helps in your understanding of the game, especially if we play it a lot.

WFHGS: Who and What We Are

The Wasatch Front Historical Gaming Society was formed back in 1998 after a split from a much larger group in the Salt Lake City area. After years of fighting over scales we decided to go separate ways and create a new group who would focus primarily on 15mm miniatures and rules for them. Well, after several years we have large forces for several periods in 15mm scale as well as building up armies for skirmish games in 25mm. Our philosophy has always been that 15mm is the best scale for grand tactical games in periods like Napoleonics, Seven Years War, and the American Civil War. However, we also prefer to do skirmish games in 25mm such as Arc of Fire, Katana, and The Sword and the Flame.

We meet twice a month on Fridays with games being planned throughout the two weeks in between. Everyone contributes to the terrain, rules, scenarios, and most important of all, painting the miniatures. We don't mind trying new things as long as someone provides the materials. Every so often we choose a period like Warhammer English Civil War and everyone contributes from the ground up. Our games are informal, but we do expect a certain amount of civility, so if you argue a lot you probably won't be invited back. However, you must be prepared to deal with a lot of sarcasm!

The group shares a common interest in military history, film, books, and trying for realism without sacrificing playability. Gone are the days of the 300 page rule books and doing two turns in eight hours. We are now striving for fun, but with results that come out historically believable. We do have some of the best painters in the country and an incredible selection of both troops and terrain. We are always looking to improve our selection, painting, and games, so if you think that you can make a positive contribution feel free to contact us. If you can survive the sarcasm, derision of an opponent's intelligence, and like to have fun in a historical context with wargaming then we have a lot to offer.

Mainly 15mm, but we do some 25mm for WECW, WW2 skirmish, Samurai, and Colonials.

We have enough painted figures to do 8-12 player games in almost all of the periods that we do, plus the terrain to go along with it.
